Reflection Point: Icons

Icons are something we see so much in our everyday life that we often ignore them. I wasn’t aware of exactly how many icons were ingrained in my brain until I started looking around.

I decided to look for icons around my house due to a rainy afternoon in New York City and I was curious how many icons were surrounding me.

MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar

These icons were right under my nose. The volume up, volume down, and brightness icons are probably the icons that I used the most on my laptop. There are no labels that indicate the name of these symbolic icons but they are universally known around the world. The icons have a very simple 2D design that is constant with Apple’s brand image.

Stove’s cookingtop

I found the icons above on my cooktop light. Like the icon set above, they are also symbolic icons with a simple 2D design. The lightbulb icon although very similar to the brightness icon on the set before, it’s used to indicate the user that there is a light that can be turned on and off. The fan icon is straightforward and it indicates to the user that you can turn the fan on and off.

Hand Soap and Moisturizer’s Icon

The icons above displaying a bunny or rabbit represent Cruelty-Free. This means that they do not test on animals. This is a fairly new icon to me because I am now more aware of the products I buy and consume and I always make sure that the products contain this icon. I have seen a lot of different illustrations and different styles for this same icon but the one thing that keeps constant is the bunny. The first icon is from a Hand Soap and the style is very minimalistic and simple. The second icon is from a moisturizer and it is more cartoon-like with more color.
